What restyling does
A restyle edit re-renders every frame of your clip in a new visual language. Lines, shading, colour and texture change; the poses, the camera angle and the timing do not. A person waving still waves at the same moment, now drawn with clean anime lines and flat cel shading.
This is the opposite of a targeted swap. Instead of changing one object, a restyle changes the look of the whole frame, which is why it works with or without a reference image.
Styles worth trying
Short, specific style names work better than long lists of adjectives.
- Hand-painted anime with soft backgrounds and clean line art.
- Watercolour on textured paper.
- Stop-motion clay animation.
- Glossy 3D cartoon, like an animated feature film.
- Comic book with ink outlines and halftone shading.
- Pixel art for a retro game look.
Why restyle footage instead of generating from text
A text-to-video model invents the motion as well as the look, so a character's movement, the camera and the timing are hard to control. When you restyle real footage, the performance is already there: you can act out the exact gesture, the camera move and the pacing you want, then decide how it should look afterwards. That makes restyling well suited to music videos, intros, short stories and social clips where the timing has to match a beat or a voice-over.
It also lets you try several looks on the same take. Run one edit as anime, one as watercolour and one as clay animation, then keep the version that suits the story. Each edit is billed separately by the length of your clip, and the studio shows the price before every run.
How to restyle a clip
Genjutsu AI accepts one MP4 or MOV file up to 100 MB, 3–15 seconds long (4–15 seconds for Seedance 2.5 and the Higgsfield workflows), at least 720 pixels on the short side and recorded at 24–60 frames per second.
- Upload the clip Any clear clip works: a walk, a dance, a pet, a product turn or a landscape pan.
- Pick a style The 'Restyle the shot' preset reads: 'Restyle @Video1 as a hand-painted anime scene. Keep the original composition, motion and camera moves. Do not change anyone's identity.' Swap 'hand-painted anime' for another style.
- Optionally add a style reference If you have the right to use an artwork that shows the look you want, add it as @Image1. Do not use a reference that copies a specific living artist's protected work.
- Run and download Check the credit price, start the edit and download the MP4 with your original sound.
Engines for restyling
Higgsfield Restyle on Genjutsu AI is built for this job: you choose a visual style and it keeps the original movement, with no reference image required, at 480p, 720p or 1080p. Seedance 2.5 Video Edit Turbo can also restyle from a sentence, and Kling O3 Video Edit is the lowest-cost option for tests.
Stronger styles, such as pixel art, change more of the image and can make fast motion look jittery. If that happens, try a softer style or a steadier clip.
Choosing the right clip
Clips with a clear subject, steady framing and moderate movement give the most stable look. Busy crowds, flickering lights and very quick cuts inside one clip make it harder to keep the drawing consistent from frame to frame. Trim the clip to a single shot, keep it between 3 and 15 seconds, and record at 24–60 frames per second and at least 720p.
Good practice
Restyling keeps people recognisable in a new drawing style, so only restyle footage you have the right to use, and get permission before you publish someone else's likeness. Genjutsu AI does not swap a real person's face or put someone into another performance.
